Why am I unable to listen and read the transcript at the same time?

родился в Нью-Йорке (холодные зимы, много серого неба за 5 месяцев и дождь).
Я переехал в Южную Калифорнию, когда мне был 21 год, и 12 месяцев езды на велосипеде и прогулки по пляжу сделали мою жизнь счастливее, и я оставался там на 25 лет, пока не стал мировым кочевником.
Да, некоторые культурные мероприятия были потеряны, но я был в порядке, если у них не было 12 месяцев солнца.
Конечно, каждый человек чувствует себя по-разному, но ты говоришь как мои мысли 30-летней давности 🙂

That’s a nice experience, Sun is definitely good when moderate, and it’s nice that you decided to be a world traveller. You actually seem very nice! Though, dude, your comment sounds a bit patronising (plus your mindset, now or 30 years ago, sounds very very different than Max’s, and what he is talking about). To travel constantly doesn’t make you a traveler, or better said, it doesn’t per-se make you grow inside (developing the inner being is the actual topic Max is talking about). One of the things one learns when actually “travelling” (with-out and mostly within) is humility. I’m a nomad too, since very young, and listening to this podcast has moved me a lot, and touched something deep inside, no matter that I am much older, and no matter I have lived in many different countries. This podcast is a fabulous reminder for a lifetime!
Words on the internet are so challenging because tone is lost – even more when trying to learn a new language.
I’m not sure which part confused you though. I read my comment again and it I don’t pick up patronism at all. What I was saying I’m pretty sure is exactly what Max is discussing – I grew up in New York which is analogous to the large and less nice climate of St. Peter and Moscow that he discusses and, when I found California it was sunny and mild all year and it affected my life for the better and stayed there. It was saying that I went through the same mental question that I think he is discussing. “Why does my life feel better here, is it the climate and the sun or is it something else” and also “is it worth leaving the better cultural elements of New York (fill in the big but rainy city) for the sun and 12 months of bike riding)”
Of course, I could be misunderstanding his Russian. I didn’t go over the transcript yet because I think I understood it pretty well.
So what I was saying was that I empathize with him. However that got missed if it was because I mentioned that I am a nomad, that was about the fact that this is true and that it changed the perspective of being in a constantly mild temperature place.
Final note, to flip the script, the whole “actually travelling” thing is an actual, real snipe and it’s the most tired thing I ever hear from pretentious people who explore the world but somehow put themselves into some special category.
That comment always, always, always comes across as an elitist comment. Always. In case you arent aware. I’m not going to start a resume comparison with you but every time I hear this statement my reply is always “we are all tourists” (because I know that the other half of that comment about being a real traveller is that you “aren’t a tourist” and a general disdain for peole who aren’t “real travellers”, it’s literally built into it as a comparison – “you aren’t a traveller you are a tourist”
And that last half of the Comment isn’t patronising, it’s telling you explicitly what that statement always means and implies.
At the end though the one thing we both agree on is that Russian With Max is the absolute best resource for learning Russian out there and hopefully my comment regarding the blog wasn’t seen as patronising and especially with my clarification.

Вы оба правы, в том плане, что вы сделали акцент на той части контента подкаста, которая вам ближе\интереснее\актуальнее.
Кстати, “Words on the internet are so challenging because tone is lost” – для меня это всегда было основной причиной не считать общение через чаты\мессенджеры\интернет реальным общением. В смысле, это тоже общение, но оно никак не может заменить живое общение, в виду того, что нет эмоций, тона, контакта глаз и т.д.

Очень трудно! Не представляю, как люди живут где-нибудь в Мурманске, когда в течение полугода солнце появляется лишь на пару часов в день.
Макс, привет! Сегодня, гуляя и одновременно наслаждаясь солнечной погодой, я слушал некоторые твоих недавних подкастов, который я как бы раньше отложил на “потом”. Общая темя всех: “Жизнь и история Юга”.
Что касается 164-ого подкаста, я получил огромное удовольствие от слов про твою теперешнюю жизнь на Юге. В связи с этом к мне в голову пришёл вопрос “Нельзя ли Максу остаться на Юге? Всё звучит очень классно”. И потом, внезапно, Макс цитирует некого Ричарда, который когда-то задал тот же вопрос. – Ой, блин!, – думал я, – он наверное говорить про меня!-.
На самом деле меня очень радует получить приветствие от тебя во время подкаста. Спасибо огромное за такую честь.
Что касается твоего предполагаемого долговременного пребывания на Юге, то я считаю такой проект очень перспективным. Ведь ты находишься рукой подать до некоторых горных регионов РФ и стран, где всё ещё говорят по-русски. Тебе есть много о чём разговаривать в связи с такими местами. И у нас сильно производит впечатление что тамошний климат очень подходит тебе. И даже твой сын любит там проводить время. Останься там если возможно. :)))

На данный момент мы с Юлей стараемся сделать всё, чтобы чаще жить здесь. Но дальнейшая жизнь расставит все на свои места, так что посмотрим!=)
